World Monuments Fund
World Monuments Fund’s mission is to preserve the world’s architectural heritage of significant monuments, buildings, and sites. WMF’s Modernism at Risk Initiative, launched in 2006 with founding sponsor Knoll, addresses the distinct threats facing great works of modern architecture around the world through advocacy, conservation, and public education. WMF also awards the World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize biennially to a design professional or firm in recognition of an innovative architectural or design solution that preserves or enhances a modern landmark or landmarks.
VDL Research Studio and Residences
With a no-interest loan from Dutch philanthropist Dr CH Van Der Leeuw, Viennese-American architect Richard Neutra began building a radical “glass house” with rooftop and balcony gardens on Silver Lake Boulevard in 1932. Named the VDL Research house, after Neutra’s benefactor, additions were made in 1940 by Richard Neutra, and again in 1966 by Richard Neutra and his son, Dion Neutra, following a fire in the 1932 wing. A small 60x70 foot lot housed Neutra’s office and three separate family residences in a tranquil environment with patios, pools, and rooftop and balcony gardens where nature penetrated the dwelling spaces. The Neutra VDL Studio and Residences demonstrated that modern urban design could be affordable, and innovative climate-sensitive design features were incorporated, included a cooling rooftop reflection pool, large overhangs, and movable sun louvers. Hundreds of creative worldwide projects were designed at VDL, and the site became a cultural and political salon, attracting some of the world’s most prominent thinkers. In 1990 Richard Neutra’s wife Dione left the VDL Research compound to the Cal Poly Pomona College of Environmental Design.
